Power of Us: History of the YWCA World

History of the YWCA WorldThe Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) is a worldwide movement consisting of over 25 million women and girls in 125 countries. The movement commenced in Great Britain, 1855, when Christian women responded to the housing, recreation, and spiritual needs of young girls who had migrated to the cities during the Industrial Revolution.

Over time the movement has broadened and developed to encourage the creation of women leaders, and to address concerns regarding the needs and the changing situation of women all over the world. The movement's mission is to promote women's leadership, advance justice, peace, health, human dignity, freedom, and care for the environment. Developing leadership of women and girls remains the core focus of the work of the YWCA around the world.

The YWCA Triangle is our worldwide logo, which symbolises the aim of the association, to develop women and girls within the three areas - body, mind and spirit. The circle enclosing the triangle represents the world as the sphere of YWCA Association work.
