What is Encore? Encore is an
exercise program designed specifically for women who have
experienced mastectomy, lumpectomy or breast reconstruction
surgery at any time in their lives. Based around floor and pool
exercises and relaxation techniques, it is safe, fun and
therapeutic.
The water resistance exercises are gentle but effective, and the
warm water relaxes and relieves affected muscles. Encore can
help women strengthen and tone their arms, shoulders and chest,
regain mobility, and improve their general fitness.
How can Encore Help? After surgery,
many women experience numbness, pins and needles, loss of
mobility, and discomfort in their upper bodies. Encore can help
relieve these problems through gentle stretching exercises.
The YWCA Encore program aims to:
improve flexibility in arms and shoulders
boost self-esteem and self image
relieve discomfort experienced as a result of surgery
reduce the potential risk of lymphoedema and;
help create a positive attitude towards life and health, all
while making new friends and acquaintances
A Supportive Environment
Encore is more than an exercise program. Women can share their
experiences, concerns and feelings with other women who understand
what you’ve been through. The YWCA believes that a supportive environment
is an important part of the recovery process, and an important part
of life where women can help other women.
